Woodturning Design Using Shape Proportion and Decoration Derek Hayes 8588218888884 Books
This book does not live up to its name. I believe the author was taking the academic route in explaining and structuring the book but offers no real value.Chapter 1 Design Elements
Author explains what color is. Red, blue, yellow are primary and can be mixed to create other colors. Like I needed a bowl design book to explain what primary colors are. He even gives a definition for "line" which is "a mark that is longer than it is wider" in case you are wondering. Skip this academic chapter
Chapter 2 Sketching
There is an actual page in the book that discuss the difference between 2D and 3D! Gone are the days that I wonder what 2D and 3D are... On serious note, the author borrow from Woodworking the concepts used to draw elliptical shapes to help you draw, not sure anyone will stick two nails on a paper and run a rope in circle to get an elliptical shape for a bowl, but oh well. You learn what papers are, color of papers, how to put the sun on one end to know where the shadow will fall.
Chapter 3 Proportion
This chapter is mainly about the fact that people use proportions. Google golden ratio and you have it. Few pages, nothing worth buying a book for.
Chapter 4 Patterns
Draw overlapping circles, you end up with a pattern. That is pretty much sums up this chapter. Not how to apply to bowls, how to use it as design element to bring out something, he just explains what is a pattern and drawing regular and irregular shapers to come up with a generic pattern
Chapter 5 Open Forms
Nothing really concrete, nothing worth buying the book for either. 10 pages on open bowl shape and using circles in vague sense. Squeeze a ballon and copy its shape would be the practical implementation of what he describes. Seriously, nothing there
Chapter 6 Enclosed forms
Few notes worth reading in this chapter, but nothing important. (He drew a circle and squeezed it in this chapter! I feel vindicated!). Not a bad few pages, but again would be nice short article online, not a book worthy.
Chapter 7 The foot
Not a bad chapter, describes various foots (10 pages with pictures) but again, nothing important. Same bowl feet you see in pictures.
Chapter 8 The rim
Very few pages of sample rim drawings, skip it
Chapter 9 Using wood
Quick read of how wood is cut, quartersawn, etc. good read but info available online. he also explains 4 or 5 wood properties/appearance, again not worth buying a book for
Chapter 10 Using decoration
You can use metal leafs, burning, etc. as options. Not how to use them, not how to get the most of them, just a list of few things you can do
Chapter 11 Using color
(there is a picture of a banana!) He talks quickly about colors, pigments, etc. Also how to hold a brush. Skip it.
I just want to hear from those who reviewed this book and gave it 5 stars, what exactly was 5 star worthy?.. Was it the banana??? Admit it! It was the darn banana!
Don't waste your money, totally worthless. 5 minutes glance and you will be over this book.

Woodturning Design Using Shape Proportion and Decoration Derek Hayes 8588218888884 Books Reviews
Fantastic book which includes a great deal of detail and references to follow up. I recommend this book highly to anyone interested in taking their work from basic bowl carving to true works of art. Tim
Beautiful pictures and help with design
Brought for my husband who has started turning boxes and bowls this last year. He is very excited to apply what he has learned from the book.
This is a technique of technical verbage adventure. Not that that is a bad thing. I have always had trouble understanding proportion. I may never understand it, however this guide helped me understand what level of design I would like to aim for. I love to explore shape and decoration always think if I can include woodburnings on this design , or if inlays are better way to go, It helped take me from my comfort level and exposed me to much higher levels that make me learn, experiment, to take a screw up and turn it into a work of art, and the other way around (ha ha). Opening my eyes to these kinds of books always shows me a path that I never knew about. More info than what I was ready for.
I am thoroughly enjoying this book. It has opened up whole new avenues of thinking about my woodturning. It is definitely not a book that describes techniques for turning. Rather, it is about thinking and planning your project before you make the first cut. In some cases the author explains how to use concepts that I knew but never thought of applying. In many other cases he introduces concepts that were new to me. It will take me some time to incorporate all of these ideas into my work, but I am excited about the possibilities.
I have been turning for about a year, and in that time I've purchased and borrowed many books. This book stands out from the crowd because it focuses on design principles rather than project ideas or instructions. I am more interested in planning and executing original pieces based on the principles of good design rather than just copying someone else's bowl or box shapes.
The author does not limit his source material to the works of wood turners. He goes to other disciplines such as glass and pottery to share ideas and concepts from those media that can also be applied to wood. Color design is also included, which I think is a nice addition, given the interesting possibilities of using paint and dyes to embellish wood.
I have not read the entire book yet--there is a lot of material to cover. However, I already think this is an excellent addition to any wood turner's personal or guild library.
This is a wonderful book for anyone that wants to break loose from the crowd of bowl makers and plate turners. Derek Hayes starts off with the basics of shapes, proportion, and colors. He goes on to show some sketching techniques as well but unless you already know how to sketch I'd suggest taking a simple drawing art class for that to hone the skill. Sketching is an art that needs practicing. It's very hard to learn from a book. Through the rest of the book you will learn how to spot patterns in the woods you use as well as how to accent them with your own contrasting patterns, Colors and applications of color are also covered in a good way. Unlike those TV shows, where they teach that the only way to do things is to break the piggy bank for the most costly chunk of wood you can find and then cut 90 plus percent of it into chips to end up with a popcorn bowl. The book will give you ideas and thought on variations and complimenting types of woods and finishing which in turn will lead into techniques that minimize waste and still yield new and fascinating creations. If you are serious about taking your turning to the next level and creating something that is unique to you, then this is a book that will get you started on the road to a whole new world coming off your lathe.
